Out of the Past

Jeff Bailey ist Inhaber einer Tankstelle in der kalifornischen Kleinstadt Bridgeport und mit Ann Miller liiert. Doch Bailey hat eine dunkle Vergangenheit: Er war Privatdetektiv, der sich in die falsche Frau verliebte und auf die schiefe Bahn gezogen wurde. Mit seinem Neuanfang im verschlafenen Bridgeport hoffte er, jenen Teil seiner Biografie unter Verschluss zu halten ... «Out of the Past» gilt als eines der Meisterwerke des klassischen Film noir.

Der Film von Jacques Tourneur, der bis dahin vor allem für seine Low-Budget-Horror-Erfolge «Cat People» von 1942 und «I Walked with a Zombie» von 1943 bekannt war, bringt in «Out of the Past» fast alles zusammen, was den klassischen Film noir ausmacht, überschreitet diesen Rahmen aber auch:
